What you need to know about succulents
Specific features of culture
Succulent cultures are a common name for plants of different species that are united by the presence of moisture-accumulating tissues. They are located in different parts of a living organism: in leaves, stems, and sometimes roots. The main function of such accumulators is to bind moisture, which is deposited in tissues. Therefore, the leaves or stems become plump, increase in volume.
The cessation of watering or a decrease in humidity becomes a signal for the bush to start spending its stock economically. It lasts for a long time, so the culture is able to survive several weeks of drought. There are many varieties of succulents that differ in species, size, shape, color. There are 60 botanical families in total, within which there are succulent cultures.
Their common homeland is an area covering the arid regions of Africa, Madagascar and South America. Sharp temperature changes and severe droughts are not uncommon here. That is why exotics are relatively easy to tolerate missed watering and not quite competent care, which is very attractive to novice flower growers. It is necessary to know that exotics easily tolerate extreme heat, but they are not at all adapted to survive in cold conditions. Even a short-term drop in temperature closer to zero is disastrous for them. Water reserves crystallize and tear soft tissues.

Description of different types of succulents with the name and photo

How to care for succulents
Plants are unpretentious, but still there are certain subtleties of care that you need to know.
How to choose a pot for succulents
The capacity for planting or transplanting is selected according to the type and size of the plant. The volume of the pot must correspond to the shape and size of the root system, otherwise diseases or even the death of the culture are inevitable. For example, elongated vessels are more suitable for haworths, shallow but wide for fat women, etc. As the plant grows, it is transplanted every two or three years, the container is replaced with a larger one, but of the same shape.
Succulent crops have strong roots, they are able to break plastic, so it is best to pick up pots or pots made of ceramics, glass. Or use a technical plastic pot, which is inserted into a ceramic pot. A florarium can become an interior decoration. This is a glass container, inside which a composition of plants, colored stones and decor is placed.

How to choose the soil
It is better to buy a soil mixture in a specialized store. Suitable soil for succulents of any brand. It can be improved by adding a little pure sand, coconut substrate and charcoal. If desired, the mixture is prepared independently. It should be light, permeable to water and air. The simplest, aka the basic version, is like this. Take two parts of sand and one part of garden soil and peat or humus. Everything is mixed well. Add a little pebbles or small stones so that the substrate is as close as possible to the natural habitat. A little charcoal wouldn't hurt.

Lighting
Almost all exotics love bright light. The best place for them is a windowsill facing southwest, south or southeast. The northern side without additional illumination is disastrous for them. At the same time, not all succulent crops tolerate direct sunlight, some, for example, crassula or duvali, get burns. Therefore, there is a general rule: the best time when plants can take "sun baths" is the morning and early evening.

Watering
Waterlogging is detrimental to almost all types of succulent. During the active growing season, they are watered every seven to ten days. It is impossible to say exactly how often to water succulents. It depends on the condition of the earthen coma. Before watering it, it must be checked, it must be completely dry. They are watered with settled, not cold water. It is best to moisten the earthen lump abundantly and let it dry. It is important that when watering, excess water does not stagnate, but merges into a pallet. During the rest period, which comes in winter, watering is reduced to once every 30-35 days. An important point. A special microclimate with high humidity develops in the florarium. Watering plants should be less frequent and less abundant.

Temperature and humidity conditions
Exotics are created to live in difficult conditions. Sharp differences between night and daytime temperatures are very favorable and desirable for them. In their homeland, in the desert, there is a difference of 25-30C. This happens at home, but it is possible to arrange nightly or night airings. Plants tolerate heat well, but the best temperature for them will be in the range from 22 to 26C. Excessive humidity of the air is not useful for them. Optimal values are about 70%. It is not necessary to spray the bushes, especially those that grow in the florarium. They won't like it. In winter, succulents need a period of rest. They are removed to a cool room with a temperature of 10-15C.

Top dressing
Properly prepared land for succulents already contains everything necessary for development. Therefore, fertilizing is most often not needed. It is possible to apply fertilizers once during the active growing season. To do this, choose universal mixtures in which phosphorus and potassium should be more than nitrogen. Top dressing is prohibited in winter and autumn, immediately after transplantation. It is undesirable to "feed" bushes growing in insufficient light. In such conditions, the top dressing will not be absorbed.

How do exotics reproduce
For the propagation of succulent crops, two methods can be used: growing from seeds or cuttings. The first method is not always successful, because the seeds are small, germinate poorly, seedlings often die. It is labor-intensive, so it is more often used when growing new varieties from purchased seed material.

The technique of how to grow succulents by cuttings is very simple. To get a viable stalk, you can do this: part of the stem or leaf is separated from the mother bush, left to dry for three to four hours, planted in a soil mixture. After drying, the cuttings take root well. You can not try to root them in water or wet cloth, putrefactive processes will begin. Taking care of rooting cuttings is the same as for adult bushes. waterlogging is especially undesirable.
