When an interior designer gets to work on an almost finished house, it's not so easy to work with its layout. Designer Ksenia Stepanenko from KS interiors studio tells about how they managed to cope with the unusual requests of the owners

GENERAL PARAMETERS
Property type: new house in a cottage settlement.

Style: English style

When I started the project, the frame of the house was already erected and covered with a roof, and the supporting columns and beams did not allow to radically change the layout. The situation was aggravated by the fact that according to the religious views of the owners of the house, it was forbidden to sit or lie with your feet in the direction of the Kaaba — the Muslim shrine in Mecca — and this was a big problem. For some reason, this detail was not taken into account when designing the house, but I found solutions and placed everything according to the wishes of the owners, without sacrificing the comfort of functional areas.

In addition, the staircase had to be slightly changed to accommodate a dressing room and a guest bathroom separating the hallway from the staircase hall. As a result, due to the irregular shape of these two rooms, an entrance hall appeared, smoothly turning into a hall with a spectacular accent staircase.

The customer was the head of the family, the whole project was coordinated only with him, and the wishes of men, as a rule, are very brief. The client was used to living in neoclassical interiors with crystal chandeliers, lots of carpets, he liked monograms. And on the one hand, he wanted a modern interior, and on the other — classics with all its attributes, which, in his understanding, look expensive and luxurious. Therefore, we were looking for a balance, combining chandeliers with glass, stucco and classical furniture — with modern lamps and sometimes even with Art Deco elements.

This project was both complex and very interesting — with the search for a balance between modern laconic interiors and mandatory neoclassicism for the first floor, where all the rooms for receiving guests are located (guest bedroom, hall, kitchen and of course the front living room) with "damask" wallpaper and crystal chandeliers. It was largely possible to combine such different styles thanks to a successful choice of wallpaper — American, with a modern ornament in a grayish scale.

In the living room, the owner planned to receive guests, mostly male company, so on the ground floor there was a fireplace area with sofas for cozy meetings and a small dining area. Next to the kitchen, through a glass partition, there is a large dining area with a long four-meter table.

The most important link in the interior was the staircase. Ornate patterns created to order from three types of porcelain stoneware lead from the hallway to it. The same motifs are repeated at the first, rounded step of the staircase, immediately attracting attention. This ornament is supported by railings created according to our sketches, which smoothly translate the "curlicues" to a more modern sound.

In the lobby, it was important for us to preserve the natural daylight. Therefore, we made part of the wall glass — the partition helped to illuminate the entrance area and at the same time became an important decorative accent of the living room.
This glass partition is the most interesting and the most problematic part of the house to implement. It uses both complex milling of the pattern on hot glass, and gluing elements from metal sheets, and painting the milled contour of the pattern. I have been looking for a long time for someone who can implement the idea and help with the details.

As a result, together with the client, we chose one company, which first delayed the sample for a month and a half, and then the basis of the partition for 4.5 months. Moreover, when the basis was established, the manufacturer decided to raise the price by 80% (!) from the original contract — yes, and this happens! I had to urgently look for other options: to purchase materials, give them to the cutting, deliver them to the facility and bring them to mind with restorers. In the end, everything turned out well, but the partition was a lot of nerves for us.

In the guest bedroom on the ground floor, we managed to make our own bathroom, which is extremely important for the comfort of guests. The room turned out to be very small in area, but due to the illuminated mirror, it is perceived significantly more.

In the main bedroom, the customer wanted to put a bed wider than two meters, but it was not possible to enlarge the room because of the load-bearing elements. To implement this idea, I used hidden doors from the bedroom to the bathroom and to the wardrobe. This made it possible to fit an oversized bed into the dimensions of the room and not to crush the interior with "readable" door panels. The wall behind the headboard, along with the hidden door to the dressing room, was painted in a deep shade of gray, and the wall opposite is finished with veneered panels along with a hidden door.

The bedrooms of all family members are on the second floor. In addition to the rooms of the owners of the house, there are also rooms for their children: two daughters and a son who is already 20 years old. We also planned for him a compact separate bathroom, hidden behind a hidden door in the wall opposite the bed, and a cloakroom with black glass facades, closed from the eyes of the incoming person.

+2

The shared bathroom with two windows has everything that a large family may need: a large bathtub and a spacious shower room, a roomy chest of drawers with two sinks that turns into a dressing table.
In the basement of the house there are technical areas, a dressing room for out-of-season clothes, a laundry room, a gym, a recreation area with a swimming pool, sauna and a place to relax.
