An unusual restaurant with a table weighing 15 tons

Estonian design studio Kuidas has designed an unusual pop-up restaurant in a dilapidated building, the interior of which has zero negative impact on the environment

Estonian design studio Kuidas creates interiors based on the slow-tech concept, which explores the impact of various materials on humans and the environment. Recently, designers have implemented an unusual project. They were approached with a proposal to arrange a pop-up space for a culinary TV show. The deadlines were the shortest: only seven days were given for all the work.

The designers approached the task creatively: they found an abandoned 19th-century sausage shop building in a small Estonian town and, without touching anything in it, created a pop-up space with a huge dining table in the center. Old, cracked brickwork, window openings with bars through which sunlight breaks through have become the best decorations for a TV show.

The table deserves special attention. It is made entirely of earth and clay, and its weight is more than 15 tons! It is noteworthy that it has special recesses designed for dishes and glasses of those who sit behind it. In accordance with the zero-waste philosophy, the plate for the second course is made of old floor boards, and the soup plate is made from an old three—liter bowl. The unusual table not only impresses guests with its appearance, but also has no negative impact on the environment. Over time, it will completely level with the ground: therefore, there is no floor in the restaurant, it is replaced by compacted soil.
