The State Art Gallery of Perm has been storing ancient Egyptian mummies in wooden sarcophagi for more than a hundred years. They entered the museum's funds in 1920 from the Panopticon — one of the many entertainment and educational institutions that worked to entertain the public in the major cities of the Russian Empire.
Until recently, these mummies and sarcophagi were practically not studied, until in 2021 a large-scale project was launched to study and restore unique ancient Egyptian monuments. It was implemented by the Perm State Art Gallery, restoration workshops "Phenomenon" and the Center for Paleoethnological Research.
The condition of the monuments was deplorable, but nevertheless they were completely restored and now they will be brought to Moscow to the Museum of the East for an exhibition that will open on April 5, 2023. Sarcophagi and cartonages will complement the exposition, as well as photographs and a documentary about the work done by restorers and scientists. After returning home to Perm, the mummies will take their place in the exposition of the new gallery building.
