The Chinese have a particularly reverent attitude to books and the tradition of printing. What are the mind-blowing interiors of city libraries and bookstores designed by Chinese designers and architects. But the Chinese passion for reading is not limited to public spaces. In their homes, a lot of attention is also paid to books. An example is a new project of the Chinese studio Atelier tao+c, which designed a reading room in one of the houses in Shanghai.

Previously, the studio had already worked on the interiors of a bookstore in Hangzhou and was happy to arrange a room with an area of 76 square meters on the ground floor of the house. Previously, there were two separate rooms on this place: a greenhouse and a bathroom, but the owners of the house decided to make a personal reading room.

The designers demolished the partitions and replaced them with spectacular bookshelves lined with travertine, between which passages 2-3 meters wide were left. The floor in the library is finished with granite of a similar texture and color, thanks to which the space turned out to be solid and organic.

The designers tried to preserve the original architecture of the room as much as possible. Although the old structure of the greenhouse required additional reinforcement, they did not sew it completely with wood, leaving a skylight and a row of windows above the ceiling. The result is a complex wooden structure that flows from the ceiling into oak shelves around the perimeter of the entire room. It perfectly combines the muted green color of the upholstery of low banquettes and the greenish marble finish on the floor around the fireplace.
