The task was to create an interior with retro motifs "in response" to the era of the construction of the house of the building of the former assembly college.

Customer and tasks
The owners of this two-level studio in the Loft on Kherson residential complex purchased it for investment purposes of subsequent leasing and invited designer Roman Kapenkin to update the interior from the developer. It was necessary to fill the standard space with individual accents. The Memphis style was taken as a basis, which originated in the 80s of the last century, almost at the same time as the building was built, now an apartment complex.

Layout
The layout was not changed from the developer. On the first level there is an entrance area, a small bathroom, a kitchen combined with a living room. On the mezzanine floor there is a bedroom. The ceiling height in the kitchen-living room is 3.8 meters, which the designer calls a great advantage. The ceilings are 2 meters under the mezzanine, and 1.6 meters on the second level.

Finishing
The developer rented the studio with finishing. Due to the limited budget, some of the materials decided to keep laminate flooring, tiles in the bathroom. To update the walls, paint was chosen and a color block technique characteristic of Memphis was applied. So, the area above the tiled apron of the kitchen is painted green. Part of the wall behind the sofa is in orange. And the space around the large (and only) window is in a blue shade.

On the second level, part of the wall around the bed and behind the headboard was decorated with OSB plates painted in a rich crimson tone. It perfectly contrasts with the bright colors of the first level and complements the dusty pink color of the walls of the mezzanine floor.

Furniture and storage systems
It is not an easy task to think over storage in such a small space. Roman solved it as follows. Almost the entire wall in the corridor is occupied by a custom-made wardrobe. It is designed not only for things, but also for storing equipment for cleaning a mop, ironing board. There is a small shoe store next to the front door.

The kitchen set is super compact. In fact, it is represented by only three lower bases. On the countertop there is a hob with two burners (to save working space) and a sink. There are no upper cabinets, they have been replaced with open shelves and a dish dryer. It turned out to save money, but it did not affect the aesthetics. A place for a microwave and a hood is planned.

A dining area was made near the window, which can also become a working area. Under the countertop there are two shelves in the color of the walls for books and various small things. Folding sofa (extra bed). Bedside tables will be installed next to the bed on the second floor, it is also possible to put a bedside table in front of the bed and complement the composition with a TV (there is an electrician for this).
In the bathroom, we decided to install an open rack for storing towels and other small things. The washing machine was put under the sink in order to save space. And above the sink is a mirror with shelves.

Lighting
The developer has thought out spot lighting and a large chandelier on the ceiling, which illuminates both the first and second levels, and also brought electrics under bedside lamps. The designer replaced the chandelier with another one with large round shades. The bed has a sconce in a similar style. The sofa has a floor lamp for additional lighting.
Decor
The decor was chosen to match the style. So, the walls are decorated with bright posters, and a vintage Rigonda record player has found its place in the living room area.

By the way, the poster in the form of a copy of the poster of the film "Irony of Fate, or With a light steam!" appeared in the hallway for a reason. The apartment complex is located in the same area where the main character Zhenya Lukashin lived. The poster covers the electrical panel, so it performs not only a decorative function.

Roman Kapenkin Designer, author of the project
The wish from the customers was to make an interior in the Memphis style with retro motifs. Bright contrasting colors are used in the interior, and the composition was built using the color-blocking technique from these colors. The beams on the ceiling are also used as decoration, they remained untouched, with a rough texture as a reminder of the building's past. The integral components of the style are graphic bright posters, graphic is also present in the tile on the apron, which echoes the fence of the mezzanine. Also, the Memphis style refers to round elements on the chandelier, cabinet handles, sconces by the bed.
