Between modernity and modernism: an apartment in Stockholm, where modernity has entered history

Note Design Studio architects have updated the interiors of the apartment in the famous Stockholm house Habitat 100, built in the 1920s, adding a spectacular marble layout on the floors and modern custom-made furniture.

Note Design Studio architects have recently completed the reconstruction of an apartment located in the famous house "Habitat 100", designed in Stockholm by the bureau Höög & Morsing in the early 1920s. The historical interiors of the late functional Art Nouveau were in a sad state, and serious architectural intervention was required. The new interiors were planned with an eye on the original preserved elements, adding modern amenities and materials. It was necessary to update the layout of the apartment, adding light to the rooms, functionality and improve the acoustics of the premises.

"To improve the acoustics, we had to remove all the floors to strengthen the beams and lay 100 tons of marble rubble. Then we filled in a new floor throughout the apartment to lay new wooden and marble floors. For the ceilings, we had to create suspended structures separated from the original floor slabs," recalls architect Jesper Mellgren"".

"The biggest changes have affected bathrooms and reception rooms. The entrance part was very cramped compared to the size of the apartment, so we changed the layout and created a spacious hall from which the main axes of movement diverge across the 300-meter apartment," said architect Jesper Mellgren from Note Design Studio.

"We had a rare opportunity to create a total design: from the general concept of space to the smallest details of fixtures and fittings. We made sure that every element of the interior corresponded to the general idea. This is a dream project — a project that challenged our creative skills, pushing us to a new level," said Jesper Mellgren.

The architects picked up the idea of referring to the history of the house, built in the early 1920s, furniture and applied art of that era. "Walking around the apartment is a kind of journey with surprises at every step, where each space has unique qualities that influence its design," explains Jesper.

"We borrowed a lot from the immediate environment, giving visual references to the style of the building and the historical context," Jesper added. — "For example, radiator screens are the balcony railings of a neighboring building, the ceiling cornices are similar to the facade cornice of a house, and the patterns on the floor are inspired by the ornament of the entrance doors in this area."

In the living rooms, they relied on details (portal cladding and floors) made of tinted oak to bring a warm and calm shade of this type of wood into the interiors. The architects chose mahogany and wenge wood as a pair for him, from which they made a frame for a parquet "Christmas tree" carpet.

Most of the furniture of Note Design Studio was designed and made by themselves: bedside tables, tables, mirrors, tables and washbasins were made according to their sketches. This gave the architects the opportunity to fully implement their ideas. To create a play of light and shadow on the walls, they used LED strips hidden under the ceiling cornices.

Three of the four bathrooms differ from each other by using different varieties of local marble. And the fourth, the smallest, is lined with scraps of stone left after facing the rest. The two fireplace portals are also made of local Brännlyckan marble with contrasting patterns, this variety comes from Nyark, an area south of Stockholm.
