In the interiors of the Warsaw apartment, architect Katarzyna Baumiller used elements of the Bauhaus and the functionality of early modernism, not forgetting about modern convenience

In this Warsaw apartment, which is located in a 1930s house, the architect Katarzyna Baumiller was inspired by the aesthetics of the Bauhaus. She wanted to restore the atmosphere of early modernism in the interiors, destroyed by the unsuccessful reconstruction of the 1990s, combining functionality in the spirit of the Bauhaus with modern comfort.

Katarzyna changed the layout of the apartment to adapt it to the needs of the new owners. The kitchen was moved to a spacious living room, freeing up space for an additional bedroom and expanding the bathroom, which now meets modern standards.
In order not to clutter the rooms and corridors with large objects, the designer designed built-in furniture, which is almost invisible, but gives a lot of storage space. So the wardrobe separating the foyer from the living room performs the function of a wardrobe at the entrance to the apartment and hides the kitchen cabinets on the back side.

Katarzyna also took the black details that connect the interiors from the Bauhaus style: an arched niche at the entrance, door jambs, skirting board and cornice, furniture, including iconic objects of modernism — the Marcel Breuer Wassily chair and Cesca chairs with wooden frames.

The same applies to a series of dark green details, they enliven the graphics of black and white interiors, add texture, dynamics and ornament. In this color, the architect made a cabinet between the corridor and the kitchen, veneered, marble countertop, floors and perforated ceiling of the bathroom.

Inspired by the experiments of early modernism, Katarzyna combined the laconicity of the furnishings and the geometry of smooth curves in the interiors, the contrast of white walls and black details with muted accents of dark green. Rounded corners, curved curtain rods, chairs and a chair on steel tubes, smooth outlines of radiators and lamps — rounded shapes give the interiors softness without disturbing the overall aesthetics of functional simplicity.
