Bright apartment with classic details 120 m2 in Moscow

Customers dreamed of a bright, spacious home — modern, but with classic details. Cozy and calm — but with a bit of parade. Inna Velichko tells how she managed to find the unity of opposites

The customers, a married couple, dreamed of a bright, spacious home: modern, but with classic details; monochrome, but with very delicate splashes of color; elegant, but without frills. I had two tasks in front of me. The first is to combine the diverse wishes of customers into a single coherent concept. The second is to increase the space by decorative techniques and neutralize the shortcomings of the original layout.

Unfortunately, the initial data of the apartment (load-bearing walls and the location of communications) did not allow for global redevelopment, so we had to work with what we have and fit the wishes of the owners into the existing reality.

Since the living room was a walk-through, and it was impossible to install a wardrobe in any other place except directly opposite it, I decided to paint it in the color of the wall, and to protect the living room with an elegant partition made of wood and glass. Ultimately, all the wardrobes in the apartment were painted in the color of the walls to visually increase the space, and the door of the large communications compartment at the front door was integrated into the wall panel in the hallway.

Taking a neutral palette as a basis and using a subtle play of shades and textures, I tried to create the right atmosphere — so that nothing in the interior irritates the eye and at the same time allows you to stop looking at the smallest details — the exquisite veneer of American walnut, maple, Japanese tamo ash or traditional ash root. On the game of smooth and embossed glass partitions in the living room. On the repeating rhythm of thin vertical lines — on the wall panel in the hallway, stucco under the ceiling, slats or milling of a bookshelf in the living room.

"Gold" is responsible for the elegance and a bit of pathos — the metal of lamps, accessories and door handles, the aged mirror of the fireplace portal, triangles of gold tiles in the bathroom, thin mosaic lines tracing the walls of the guest bathroom with a Mondrian lattice, as well as a tile carpet cut from glossy granite in the hallway. They are echoed by individual pieces of furniture with a very slight reference to Art Deco - for example, a shelving in the living room or our beautiful partition between the living room and the hallway.

The art object on the scale of this apartment is, of course, a wooden partition between the living room and the hallway. The partition protects the living area from the entrance, creates a sense of privacy and comfort and, at the same time, like the "cherry on the cake", adds sophistication to the interior. Everything in it is not accidental. Two separate segments are mounted at a certain distance from the wall and from each other specifically — so that the structure does not look like a monolith, but on the contrary, demonstrates freedom and air to everyone entering here.

The shape of the segments repeats the triangles on the floor in the hallway. The game of two types of glass — transparent and embossed — is of interest. Initially, I planned to do without transparent glass and leave these sections through. However, I had to abandon this idea for the sake of greater stability of the partition. The work — especially for the specialists of the carpentry workshop — was oh, how difficult! But the result turned out to be exactly as I dreamed.

Pay attention to the dining tables — both in the dining area and in the kitchen there are products of a small carpentry workshop "Kornilov". They not only have a remarkable shape, but also have very beautiful and tactile pleasant countertops.

When I arrived at the apartment for the first time, I was horrified by the size of the living room — I couldn't believe myself that it was possible to place a full—fledged room there for the whole family - parents and children living separately. But due to the light shades flowing into each other, the room has become larger and more spacious.

A bio fireplace and a huge sofa were the dream of a Dolce vita — however, visually suitable fireplaces were too powerful for a small room, so a fireplace with a steam generator appeared here. It does not pretend to be a traditional fireplace (which is a plus!), humidifies the air and burns with a very beautiful "fiery" flame — and the mirror panel "eglomize" behind the fireplace further enhances this effect.

Textiles were chosen very carefully — I wanted to play on the subtle tints of the living room shades and at the same time interrupt the monotony of the neutral shades of the room and add a little graphics.

The bedroom turned out to be very delicate, thin — with flying birds behind the headboard and a thin, translucent curtain already really taking off into the air from any breeze. By the way, there is another one hiding behind it — blackout: if the owner needs a good night's sleep, he can close the huge window tightly.

A graphic guest room with mid-century style furniture is made for visiting children. However, it can also be used as an office for the landlady of the apartment, if she needs to retire and work in silence.

Moderately brutal, moderately ironic, moderately calm — the office fully reflects the personality of its owner. This object, for reasons beyond our control, was very complex. Tools broke down, supplies were lost and delayed, and the whole team, including suppliers and apartment owners, was sick with covid in a circle (and more than once). But the calm and friendly customer bravely endured all the hardships and delays while waiting to move into his new apartment.

The guest bathroom is another closed designer gestalt. Once I already offered my customers a bathroom, as if lined with gold Mondrian mesh, but they were afraid. However, the idea lay "in the piggy bank" and finally waited in the wings.

A very small and once very uncomfortable room has turned into an elegant hallway - not too much, however, increased in size, but with a full set of all the necessary items. There is a large full-length mirror, a banquette with drawers for shoes, a rod for hangers and a large roomy wardrobe, due to the color merging with the wall and mimicking in space. The hallway is the face of the house. A space that attracts guests to go further and look with curiosity: "And what is there, around the bend?" I hope that's what's happening.
