Cozy beige house in Lisbon

The Vasco Lima Mayer Arquitecto bureau got only the ruins of an old house — the more incredible was its transformation into a cozy space for living

The rooms in the house are small, but thanks to the views of the private garden and the Tapada Azhuda Park, they seem larger.

This house in the Ajuda district of Lisbon stood for a long time — so long ago that it turned into ruins, retaining only the facade, which has become an integral attribute of the local landscape. Therefore, having received the task to resuscitate the building, the Vasco Lima Mayer Arquitecto bureau decided to leave it — but moved the entrance to the place where the wall used to be, immediately showing what was planned to be done: to update everything that is possible, but not to destroy to the ground.

The graphic staircase connecting the three floors is designed in such a way as to emphasize the vertical of the building. At the very bottom there are two small living rooms with access to the terrace and private garden. Above, there is a combined kitchen—living room space and a south-facing veranda, so that sunlight gets here most of the day, and residents can admire the view of the Tapada Azhuda Park.

Even higher is a private studio-study with a balcony, ideal for creative activities in solitude. And finally, on the attic floor there is a bedroom with a double bed, from which it is easy to watch the stars. In general, from architecture to solid wood furniture, everything in this project is an example of how the balance of materials, proportions of spaces, scales and locations makes it possible to create a house that is not just interesting to study, but in which it is pleasant to live.
