"My Shangri-La" is how designer Andrew Sheinman calls his house on the Greek island of Serifos. The idea to settle in this paradise was born with his wife Helen ten years ago. Helen was born and raised in London, in a Greek-Cypriot family, speaks Greek fluently and has been fond of local culture and cuisine since childhood. Therefore, it is not surprising that the family often vacationed in Greece.
"For many years we went to Serifos, an island popular among the creative crowd of artists and writers,— says Andrew. — That year we rented apartments in Chora on the island of Ios, an ancient fortress city built in the Middle Ages to fight off pirates and robbers. One day we rented a yacht and went on a cruise around the island. Squinting from the sun, I noticed a modest building on the shore, towering over the water. An olive grove gleamed nearby, and a rocky path wound from the house down to the pristine beach past fig trees, prickly pear and bougainvillea... I didn't hesitate. I wanted to turn this lovely corner into a "safe haven" for my family."

"The time was right for this. My daughters, Alexia and Isabel, were busy with work. My interior design firm, Pembrooke & Ives, has also worked hard on projects all over the world. We wanted to create a refuge where we could escape from the hustle and bustle at any moment and take a break from our crazy life in Manhattan.
I've always liked Greece. I first came here in the 1970s from England as a 13-year-old boy, a friend of mine invited me on a cruise in the Aegean Sea with his family. Later I married Helen Tsanos, a half—Greek, half-Cypriot, beautiful woman, writer, chef, culinary blogger and yoga instructor.

The house stands on the shore of the Aegean Sea and has its own wild beach. Gardens bloom around, olives, lemons and figs grow.

The house belonged to a married couple from Athens, who built it in the early 1990s. They agreed to sell it on the condition that we take care of the land and preserve the original structure in future alterations. That's what we did. Expanding the house, we drew inspiration from traditional Cycladic dwellings with their whitewashed walls and masonry."

As is customary among the Greeks, this house is designed to receive guests on the street. It provides terraces and canopies, which serve as an organic continuation of the building itself. On them you can sunbathe, read, do yoga or sit with a glass of wine, admiring the sea sunsets.

The beds and tables for the terraces are made to order.

Inside the house, the main "center of attraction" is the kitchen, the hostess's favorite place. Helen is the author of a popular cookbook of recipes of Greek cuisine, she loves to cook, because Andrew approached the kitchen design with special attention. Everything here is ergonomic, comfortable, practical and beautiful. Stainless steel harmoniously combines with Carrara marble and glass. And the main place is given to the stove, in which Helen cooks an amazing pizza with olive oil from her own grove and bakes fish in salt according to traditional Greek recipes.

The kitchen is the main place in the house. The stainless steel island is made to order. Sinks and plumbing, design by Marcel Wanders, Boffi. Shelves, steel, cabinets, Carrara marble. Ceiling ceilings made of bamboo and walnut. The glass lamp above the kitchen island is made to order.
