Tatiana Brodach, architect, artist, co–founder of the Lamps of 50-60-70s gallery and a sculptor whose plasticine men managed to conquer the whole world, talks about her apartment in Milan, which she turned into an art project especially for us

The first time I was in Milan was in 1999, when, after MARCHI, I decided to continue my studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano University. I immediately fell in love with this city. Milan is beautiful, delicious, and the main thing for me is that creative energy is gushing here!

Then I spent three years in Milan and returned to Moscow, but at the first opportunity I flew to Milan. I've always felt at home here. In 2012, we decided to buy an apartment in Milan. I knew exactly what I wanted was an old house. And I found even more than I expected. The house is located in my favorite area of Chinatown, four hundred meters away — the Arch of Peace, Sempione Park, Triennale. Not far from Corso Como, and Brera is ten minutes on foot.

Table Alanda‘18, designed by Paolo Piva, B&B Italia. It features sculptures by Tatiana Brodach from the Love is a verb series, which are produced by Seletti. Spaghetti chairs, designed by Giandomenico Belotti, FlyLine. Floor lamp, 1950s. Sofa, IKEA.

The space of the apartment was flooded with light, and the wooden beams and the second floor created the feeling of a small house rather than an apartment. The interior, I must say, has hardly changed. The previous owners made repairs, put a white modern kitchen on the background of a golden wall. At first I was going to repaint it, but then I just bought a blue pouf and... got used to it. I redid only the central element on the ground floor, added wooden cabinets in the hallway, shifted the fireplace so that it stood in the center in front of the sofa, added shelving. One day the wall at the dining table was doused with lambrusco, and I decided to paint it. I made a gray "apron" with blue edging. In a similar way — a black background with gray edging — I painted the wall behind the sofa in the living room.

In the living room on the ground floor: a niche with books, photographs, old wooden boxes with tools and an icon of the Italian design of the 1970s - a floor mirror Nail Mirror ("Nail")

There is no elevator in the house, a very narrow staircase of complex shape leads to our fourth floor. Therefore, the furniture was chosen on the principle of whether we could drag it in. The bed is collapsible, the sofa too. Later, numerous design items were added, tables, drawers, mirrors and, of course, lamps. Lamps designed for our Moscow showroom Lamps of 50-60–70s, sometimes find a temporary home here. There is a lot of flesh on the walls — my works, plasticine men and various photographs. With them, the house is always crowded and never boring.
