Designer Natalia Sytnikova designed this apartment for her family. I used different techniques and finishes to check on personal experience how certain materials behave in use.

Designer Natalia Sytnikova, her husband and two children bought this apartment after living in a four-bedroom apartment. When choosing a new property, we relied on several important factors. First, the budget. Secondly, the opportunity to make a redevelopment for the needs of the family. There was a need for a separate bedroom for parents, a children's room and a spacious common area for family pastime, a lot of storage systems not only for things, but also for sports equipment (the family is fond of cycling, the husband is engaged in hockey, everyone is snowboarding). Thirdly, the location in the city center. These introductions led to the fact that the family chose not a new building, but a secondary apartment in the house of 1975.

Redevelopment
The designer and her husband initially chose the apartment so that it was possible to redevelop for themselves, that is, there should not have been load-bearing walls inside. Therefore, it was possible to design the space for the needs that they formulated initially.
It was a four-room apartment with one walk-through room, a small kitchen, separate bathrooms. As a result of the redevelopment, a three-piece kitchen was made and two rooms adjacent to it were combined. The bathrooms were also combined and expanded due to the corridor. The hallway was isolated from the room by a new partition.

Kitchen with gas, initially a sliding partition was planned according to the project (and only with it it is possible to coordinate such a redevelopment approx. editors), but it has not yet been installed.

Finishing
In choosing the finish, the designer adhered not only to the principles of practicality and appropriateness, the author was interested in trying different materials personally in order to recommend or not recommend them to his customers.
They chose paint for the walls, wallpaper in separate areas on the wall behind the sofa in the living room, in the nursery by the bed, even in the bathroom. In the latter case, the canvases were varnished and placed in the area where water would not splash. Natalia is happy with this experience. In the hallway, brick wallpaper was used for the walls.

The wall behind the bed in the bedroom was decorated with a panel made of imitation timber, which Natalia's husband made with his own hands, as well as photo wallpapers with a picture of mountains. "It's like a window into the world of travel and beautiful landscapes. Travel is an important and integral part of our life, and it was important to us that this was also reflected in the interior," the designer comments on the choice.

Laminate flooring was chosen for the floor in the rooms, wet and dirty areas of the bathroom, kitchen, hallway are decorated with tiles. The walls in the bathroom are also tiled (except for the area with wallpaper that we described above).
Furniture and storage systems
There are closets in the hallway and in each bedroom. In the hallway, the designer has provided a place for storing hockey equipment and snowboards, as well as outerwear, this cabinet with forced ventilation. There is a pedestal for small things.

The bedrooms have wardrobes for everyday things. A workplace is allocated in the living room, since Natalia often works from home, there is also a place to store various documents. The TV stand is another storage system.

The kitchen area of 6 square meters has a corner set with a number of upper and lower cabinets, provided all the necessary built-in appliances. Lockers were made even under the windowsill, and a bedside table was also installed for various necessary trifles.

"We really love and appreciate natural wood and individuality in pieces of furniture. The main furniture is a kitchen, wardrobes are made to order according to our sizes from budget materials. But the kitchen countertop, window sills, my husband made my desk out of an oak shield. The dining table with epoxy resin filling is also made by his hands. Under the TV we have a cabinet from IKEA, on which we ordered a table top made of MDF in oak veneer, bedside tables and a chest of drawers in the kitchen are made according to my sketches in a local furniture workshop," says Natalia.

Lighting
It was important for the designer to provide for different lighting scenarios. The ceilings are low, so they did not use large chandeliers. As a general light, spotlights and overhead "tablets". For additional light, wall sconces were chosen in the right areas: by the beds, the dining table.

Natalia Sytnikova, KitDecor Interiors Designer, author of the project and owner of the apartment
For the design of my apartment, I chose a Scandinavian style and a calm natural color scheme. The basis of the interior is white walls and warm wood on the floor. Accents are dark saturated colors: blue walls in the living room area and a bright saturated grass-colored sofa; black wallpaper in the bed area in the nursery. In our bedroom, the main accent was a panel made of imitation timber. I think that Scandinavian style is a very good solution for small apartments with great functionality and a limited budget. And I also think this style is very cozy and family-friendly. In working with clients, I also often take it as a basis.
