From the archives: visiting Anna Mongayt*

Having bought an apartment located in the buildings of the former Rassvet factory, Anna and Sergey Mongayt immediately decided on the style of the interior: loft means loft! The project was entrusted to her friend, architect Katerina Vinogradova. And we printed it in October 2018

The two-light space of the living-dining room was partially blocked to create a place for a bedroom, a nursery and an office on the second floor. In a niche on the side of the hallway is a painting by Yuri Pimenov. Toggle retro switches, TJ Electric.

Anna Mongayt* (*included by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation in the register of natural persons-foreign agents) — TV presenter, creative producer of the Dozhd TV channel, her husband Sergey is a DJ and graphic designer, and their two sons tried on life in a loft. The choice of style was suggested by the house itself — the club residential complex occupies the buildings of the former Rassvet plant. "Our second child was born, and we decided that we wanted not just a big apartment, but some unusual housing," Anna recalls. — We were immediately looking for a factory loft with high ceilings. We once had an apartment filled with cheerful space plastic from the 60s, there was another one - cold, "high—tech", now we wanted a New York loft, like in the Meatpacking District, where rough industrial textures and wood are combined."

The choice fell on the former furniture factory "Muir and Meriliz" — the project of the famous architect Roman Klein, which in Soviet times was occupied by the machine-building plant "Dawn", and recently the architectural bureau DNK ag converted into lofts. "In our new 154 square meters with ceilings of 5.9 m, it was necessary to accommodate a bedroom, two separate children's rooms — for teenager Matvey and baby Demyan, three bathrooms, a studio space for cooking and hanging out, a dressing room and even a microcabinet, where my husband dreamed of retiring in silence," Anna continues. — The architect Katya Vinogradova did it all flawlessly."

Kitchen, IKEA. Factory cabinets were supplemented with custom-made wine racks and a kitchen island with a built-in stove and a protruding bar counter. A large wooden table is also made to order. OMG LL chairs from Zuiver. On the table — a vase from Gilles Caffier and a container from Pulpo, salon GK Concept. On the floor there is a tile made of aged metal. The kitchen apron is an old brick.

The existing beams and columns were cleaned and covered with a protective varnish. The vintage floor lamp was brought by the owners from Florence.

"According to her project, the loft was divided into two floors, keeping the second light above the dining table. The decoration combined not only textures, but also times — bricks for wall cladding were bought from old factories. Metal plates at the entrance to the apartment also once lined the floor of either a factory or a railway station. The table, iron shelves, wooden cabinets were made to order. The children's space turned out to be soundproofed so that our music would not interfere with their sleep, and cheerful. I especially love the bathroom, where the heroes of the old computer games Pacman and Super Sonic were laid out with tiles. Recently I learned about a St. Petersburg company that sells Soviet monumental mosaics on the theme of pioneers, workers and cosmonauts — cut from abandoned buildings of the 1970s. Now I dream of buying one. But in general, our apartment is the very combination of spaciousness and good taste that we were striving for," says Anna.

"Old concrete in its nature — what could be more beautiful?"Architect Katerina Vinogradova, founder of the RE architectural studio bureau.

"In general, it is dangerous to make an interior for friends," admits architect Katerina Vinogradova. — You can stop being friends, but everything went well with us. We completely rebuilt the space, demolished the old ones and erected new floors, as a result of which we increased the area from 154 to 162 square meters. It was measured for a long time so that the normal ceiling height was obtained on both floors. To do this, the structural pie of the floor was minimized and the ceiling beams of the early twentieth century were left open. They were simply polished and highlighted. Old concrete in its nature — what could be more beautiful?! In contrast to it, modern wooden cubes were built — a bathroom block in the hallway, a block of cabinets in the hallway and a kitchen block; a staircase and almost all the furniture were made to order, from shelves to Sergey's DJ table."

Sergey wanted an office where no one would disturb him. A suitable place with sliding doors and a view of the two-light dining room was found on the balcony of the second floor.

All private rooms on the second floor are covered with parquet board. The concrete ribbed ceiling — the legacy of the old factory interior — was rebuilt and built-in lighting was made. The master bedroom opens onto a balcony where a garden is planned. The bed is made to order. Tables-planters, Menu, salon GK Concept.

The Mongites took only paintings and books from their former apartment. For this, we were looking for unusual things to match the interior. Among the most favorite acquisitions is a vintage floor lamp, which the owners brought from Florence. In the family, this item is called "kikoza" from the Italian "Che cos'?" ("What is it?") — the question that the customs officer asked twenty times, artistically fishing out the spare parts of an unknown unit from the box. Now "kikoza" stands in the living room on a warm floor of polished concrete.

"I had to look for the shade of the floor," says the architect. "It was essential for Sergei to get rid of the yellowness that almost any varnish gives. He also insisted on expensive English switches, which are installed throughout the apartment, in conditions of economy. In general, Anya and Seryozha are atypical customers. Unlike most, they like the semi-darkness in the bathroom, they do not need curtains for the bath and fences in the shower. Sergey's office on the second floor is located almost on the balcony — a rather extravagant solution, and there are many such in this project. And this once again proves a simple rule — bright people do not have ordinary interiors. Even if you have decided on the style in advance!"
