Glam and Baroque: Milanese restaurant Beefbar by Humbert & Poyet

Emile Humbert and Christophe Poyet from Humbert & Poyet came up with unusual interiors filled with ironic (and comfortable) details for the restaurant located in the former chapel. They turned to the history of this place, the Lombard Baroque of the XVI century, and to the Milanese atmosphere of the 1960s with its luxury finishes and textures

For its Italian debut, the international restaurant chain Beefbar has chosen one of the fashionable squares of Milan — Piazza del Quadrilatero. There, in the historic building of the Archiepiscopal Seminary, a hotel complex has recently opened, which houses the five-star Portrait Milano Hotel, boutiques and bars. And the new Beefbar restaurant is located in the former chapel of this building. The interiors of the restaurant, designed by the design duo Humbert & Poyet, embodied the idea of restrained luxury and "warm glamour" inspired by Milan cafes of the 1940s and 1960s.

After the restoration, the renovated 16th-century building in the Lombard Baroque style (and one of the oldest seminaries in Europe), expressively connected the past and the present thanks to the work of Michele de Lucchi and his studio AMDL Circle. They brought a modern sound to the interiors of the former Archbishop's Seminary, without violating the historical architecture of the building.
A similar respect for the history of the place and the tactful introduction of modern features into it was reflected in the interiors of the Beefbar Milano restaurant by Humbert & Poyet, where the designers complemented the Baroque architecture with the sophistication of Italian design of the mid-twentieth century.

You can get to the restaurant through the monumental portico of the former seminary, which functions as an open urban space filled with shops and cafes.
In the interiors, the authors of the project emphasized the nostalgic charm of the place with a restored vaulted ceiling, dark walnut panels with fluting and terrazzo floors. By the way, their undulating pattern pays homage to the modernist architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni. He was a key figure of the so-called Milanese style, and in the design of the restaurant Humbert and Poye reflected his characteristic features: a combination of curves and straight lines, steel and velvet, traditional and modern.

Luigi Caccia Dominioni is not the only Italian modernist designer whose legacy was addressed by Emile Humbert and Christophe Poyer. Vico Magistretti chairs and Osvaldo Borsani sconces help to emphasize the atmosphere of the middle of the last century, as well as Asterios pendant lamps made of bronze and frosted glass from Humbert & Poyet and Sorbet table lamps with a patina of light bronze.

Wide sofas were covered with luxurious green velvet, which added bright colors to the interior, and the worktops made of Verde Alpi marble, glossy tiles and bronze details brought elements of "glam" to the interior. The walls were decorated with an eclectic collection of works of art that complemented the stylish and playful space of the restaurant.
