From the characteristic features to the selection of furniture or decor, we have made a detailed guide to the design of a house or apartment in the loft style.

Loft style in the interior is always spectacular, catchy and a little brutal. But this direction is accompanied by a lot of prejudices: for example, that it is suitable only for huge squares, mansions or penthouses with four-meter ceilings. And in general, it's too "street", uncomfortable, not for life. In this article, we will deal with all the stereotypes and tell you in detail how to implement the style within not only a private house, but also an apartment.
What features are characteristic of the industrial style? Listed in the video

Loft style: what is it

The history of this direction is quite well known: it originated in the United States in the last century, when hundreds of factories and warehouses were abandoned after a large-scale economic crisis. They were quickly turned into creative studio apartments for the local bohemians, whose representatives successfully mixed industrial elements with unusual furniture, bright decor and art objects. The modern version of the loft practically does not differ from the original one, except that now it is becoming more and more simplified, adapting to the realities of urban apartments. And yet the main markers remain the same.
The features of the loft style include:

Rules of registration
Let's consider the design features of a house or apartment in the loft style with photos of interiors.
Finishing

Finishing is especially important for this direction, because most often it becomes accent (even if the surfaces themselves are inconspicuous) and sets the appropriate atmosphere. There are no strict restrictions when choosing materials, but some are used less often: for example, linoleum or wallpaper with a traditional pattern.
For the floor, high-quality laminate, parquet, engineering board, as well as any types of tiles: tile, granite, quartz vinyl are suitable. The floor covering can be both uniform for the entire apartment (for this purpose, PVC tiles are often taken, which is suitable for wet areas, but at the same time tactile enough to lay it in the bedroom and living room), and vary depending on the rooms. In order not to visually divide the apartment into small zones, especially if it is small, it is better to limit yourself to a couple of materials: for example, laminate and granite. By the way, another perfectly suitable for the loft interior of an apartment by design is a self-leveling floor covering, which looks like concrete.

The ceiling, which in most other styles is designed concisely and as unobtrusively as possible, can play a leading role in terms of design here. Materials can be any (GCL, stretch fabric, concrete), while it is desirable to add decorative elements. The most popular option is wooden beams. Also, if the ceiling height allows, you can make several levels, thus zoning the open space. In addition to the classic white color, a colored canvas looks organically in the loft interior: for example, in shades of gray or even black.

The walls can be decorated with any materials suitable for the conditions of the room: from paint to tiles. But ideally, use expressive textures that are responsible for loft brutality. These can be wall panels, authentic brickwork or its imitation, decorative plaster with different effects (rust, stone, concrete), glass block inserts, porcelain stoneware. Wallpaper is most often used varieties for painting, without a pattern or with imitation of natural materials. Fiberglass is suitable for vandal-proof finishing.

Furniture
The first rule of furniture should not be too much. Here the industrial style approaches minimalism: as much space and air as possible, no extra items.

Otherwise, there are two approaches to the situation: bright, original, accent furniture or, conversely, neutral. In the second case, it will balance an active finish or an unusual decor. But even if you choose products with a concise design, still add authenticity.
These can be:
To reduce the amount of furniture without compromising comfort, look for multifunctional and transformable models, use all kinds of modular systems (for example, a sofa in the living room or shelving in the office) and mobile products on wheels (bookcases, armchairs, island).

Decor and textiles
Little things are always important, but if you design a stylized loft, they have a special meaning. It is the decor and textiles that add characteristic accents.
The main task of textiles is to balance the "coldness" of rough textures and compensate for the lack of bright cheerful colors (they may be in the palette, but definitely not in the main role). Therefore, choose laconic, but necessarily high-quality, soft, pleasant to the touch fabrics. If you lack color and ornament, you can enter them just the same through textiles and change them according to your mood.
The decor also creates a unique handwriting of the interior. Use:

Lighting
Lighting is especially important for the loft style in the interior, as in the photo below.

The functional and aesthetic roles of lamps in this case are equivalent. Regardless of whether you are equipping a large house with high ceilings and a fifty-meter kitchen-living room or a small eurodrive, you need to think carefully about the lighting design. Do not limit yourself to the overhead light in each room: add local sources and decorative lighting if you need to emphasize an interesting decor or painting.
In terms of design, pay attention to the models characteristic of this direction:
And, of course, LED lighting will perfectly fit into the loft aesthetics.

Combination with other styles
In the modern version, the industrial style rarely exists by itself, especially within the framework of a typical apartment. If desired, it can be mixed with any directions, but some combinations have already been established and look especially organic.

Minimalism
Minimalism is one of the best companions for a loft, because they are ideologically similar in many ways: the absence of unnecessary things, the emphasis on textures rather than bright colors, open space. Most often, the industrial interior already includes elements of minimalism, but if you wish, you can exaggerate them a little, achieving cleaner lines and even a certain asceticism of space (if, of course, you like that).

Scandi
The combination of loft and Scandinavian aesthetics works perfectly. On the one hand, these directions also have common features: the absence of excessive brightness, a lot of natural light, restraint. At the same time, scandi remains a very warm, practical and, most importantly, budget style, so it softens the space and makes it more adapted to everyday life.
When these styles are mixed, a cozy bright loft in the apartment turns out, although this combo is also suitable for a country house. To get a harmonious combination, look for intersection points: for example, for walls, you can choose decorative brickwork in white or light gray. Combine natural scandi decor with more flashy industrial details. Compensate for simple Swedish-style furniture with textured finishes, etc.

Classic
Any modern elements instantly enliven static classics, make it more interesting and multifaceted. Depending on how strong and spectacular the contrast you want to get, the loft can be combined with a classic style in its purest form or with a more familiar softened neoclassical.
Nearby, brick and natural wood, concrete surfaces and stucco, rough, untreated materials and luxurious crystal chandeliers look great. Combine stylistic markers in the proportion that you need: for example, a neoclassical base can act as the basis, or, conversely, you will dilute the traditional elements of a catchy loft design.
