Clear geometry, muted tones and natural materials create a relaxed interior of a house in a quiet river valley

The mansion in the Hudson River Valley was built in 2007 by American architect and Columbia University professor Michael Bell. The one-story building in the shape of the letter "U" with panoramic windows vaguely recalls the famous villa Farnsworth Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe) and the "Glass House" of Philip Johnson (Philip Johnson). The new owners purchased the property in 2016 and brought in New York studio Drake/Anderson to refresh the interiors.

The main source of inspiration for the authors of the project was nature itself: the mansion stands in a picturesque forest area of the Hudson Valley. Clear geometry, lots of natural light, muted tones and natural materials formed the basis of the design concept and allowed the interiors to become a harmonious continuation of the surrounding landscape.

For the living room, the designers chose a range of shades of gray, brown and ivory to create a relaxed atmosphere. A silver carpet from Tibetano with a convex, tetris-like pattern gave texture to a laconic space. As in other rooms, the interior combines modern pieces of furniture and details in the spirit of the mid-century.

The relaxed aesthetic continues in other interiors of the house, for example, in the bedroom. In the center of the room there is a cozy king—size bed and a soft bench from the Milan studio Dimore Studio. Slender table lamps decorate wooden nightstands from New Day Woodwork. A wide white carpet from ALT for Living helps to soften the restrained look of the bedroom, and panoramic windows provide a view of the peaceful forest landscape. www.drakeanderson.com
