The coast of Malibu, known for its endless sands and crystal clear water, attracts surfers from all over the world. The clients of designer Vanessa Alexander, a married couple who cannot imagine their life without conquering the waves, were no exception. The family purchased a plot on the ocean with three separate cottages: the main building and two guest houses.

First of all, the designer updated the interior of the main house. It was decided to demolish the partitions between the living room, kitchen and dining room, and replace the stained glass windows with transparent glass to let more sunlight into the space. Additional dormer windows were made for the same purpose. The studio also restored the former look to the arches of the portico separating the house from the pool.

Then the Alexander Design studio team started finishing. As the designer admits, one of the sources of inspiration for her was the architecture of the Balearic Islands. Warm earthy tones were chosen as the basis, which are harmoniously combined with the green and blue shades of the landscape outside the window. The floors are made of concrete, a material that easily tolerates the effects of salt water and bright sun, and the walls are covered with white paint. Most of the furniture, including the sand-colored kitchen, sofas and dining table, was made to order. The decor is complemented by vintage items and bright accent details, such as Moroccan pillows, which create a relaxed atmosphere.

The project also included the arrangement of the site. The team developed a new landscaping concept, completely renovated the pool and designed outdoor recreation areas, including an observation deck with ocean views.
