Designer Ekaterina Lovyagina talks about the reconstruction of a 290 m2 cottage in a small settlement near Absheron: "A new frame was built around a small two-storey house, living space was added and covered with a new roof. It sounds pretty simple..."

Ekaterina Lovyagina
Founder of the design studio "Texture". Born in Krasnodar, graduated from the Art and Graphic Faculty of the Kuban State University, has been engaged in interior design since 2001.
"There is always a bohemian note in my projects in one way or another, because I perceive myself primarily as an artist and I can't think of interiors without art"

The terrace is a place where the family spends most of their time during the spring and summer season. The barbecue area is decorated with tiles with a bright pattern. A comfortable and hospitable table sets a special festive mood.

"A new frame was built around a small two—storey house, living space was added and covered with a new roof," says designer Ekaterina Lovyagina. — In words, everything is quite simple, but this is a painstaking task — to functionally link the new volume with the existing one without disturbing the aura of the old dacha. The difficulty of working on the layout was also that we could not rebuild the existing rooms. The bedrooms, the hall, the dressing room on the ground floor and the gallery of the second light, where the upper bedrooms open, remained unchanged. Even the doors remained in their places, not to mention the height and shape of the room. It was also necessary to keep the old staircase and beat the small pool on the ground floor, the bowl of which also remained the same in configuration."

"However, all the work was really easy. The customers are a surprisingly friendly and very friendly big family, with a subtle sense of beauty, — continues Ekaterina. — Many decisions on construction and decoration were left to me. But the general line of the concept came from the head of the family, he took an active part in coordinating the project and even found some items himself that determined the image of the future interior. In particular, an antique sideboard in the living room."

"The interior design is based on the contrast of materials, colors, patterns, textures, volumes. I was happy to use my favorite handmade ceramics, natural stone and real old boards. They are used in the decoration of the master bathroom, barbecue on the terrace, kitchen and fireplace, which we made two-sided."

"As always, the Metlakh tile was used, amazingly enriching the interior with the rhythm of patterns. They were softened and supported by hand-painted tiles on the kitchen apron and framed windows in the kitchen. The main color in the interior is green, its moss, myrtle, olive and fern tones. For the main surfaces, I chose a complex white and anthracite from the palette of American paints and a lot of tinted wood in different colors and smoothly painted. The atmosphere of the old cottage is created by natural linen curtains and furniture upholstery, jute carpets, wide wooden floorboards for the second floor with knots and complex color transitions."

"I repainted and repainted an ancient billiard table, choosing olive cloth for it. In the nursery, I built a bed for four people based on the beds in mountain shelters and supplemented the windows in the billiard-library and the nursery with comfortable wide window sills. You can even lie on them now."

"One of the funniest stories related to this project is how we dirty the ceiling over the living room. The carpenters gave us a relatively boring color of the filing and beams, and the customer and I decided to slightly correct it. At a height of six meters, the guys balanced on scaffolding and godlessly spoiled the neat ceiling. Everything turned out wonderfully."

The two-light space is divided vertically with the help of color. The lower part of the living room and the adjacent kitchen are white. The upper tier and the bypass gallery are dark, which made it possible to beat the low second floor.

The living room and kitchen are separated by a fireplace with a tunnel furnace. From the living room side, the portal of the two-sided fireplace looks massive and bright. Quite different from the kitchen side.

"The adult bedrooms were left from the old house, so their proportions did not change. During the reconstruction, new windows were formed, and the color scheme of the rooms was determined by the illumination and the wishes of those who will have bedrooms."

"A separate story is for children, my pride and joy for children and their guests. Huge bunk beds, where on the upper tier each bed has its own window, a capacious and convenient storage system and a lot of space for games. I will note that adults also loved to lie there, and now the room has become very popular among the family and guests."

"I can't help but say about the photos I used to decorate the house. They were made by my mother, a professional photographer and journalist, — continues Ekaterina Lovyagina. — According to the original concept of "Home for the Soul", we wanted to use only what belongs to this place. Since our own dacha is located nearby, literally two mountains away, I took my mother's photos of local nature and fauna and enlarged them for this project. All plants, insects, flowers were photographed in these forests at different times of the year."

"Bathrooms and spas are my endless passion. On the second floor, real old boards, furniture made of natural teak, mirrors in an artistic baguette, surprisingly matched in color with bright Spanish ceramics, stone sinks and bronze faucets create a wonderful ensemble. In the spa area, it turned out to embody the concept of wabi-sabi and get a great space for relaxation and inspiration."

Spa area. The decoration uses Portuguese mosaic, Kerion, a complex green color for the pool bowl and natural waterproof plaster for the walls and ceiling. The designer beat the existing crossbar, turning it into a rack element that separates the relaxation area in front of the sauna furnace and the font itself. The bench in the shower was equipped with a heating system, thereby turning it into a mini-hammam.

"All the objects support each other and look as if they have been here since the construction of the house. It is a great joy for a designer to realize that a carefully thought-out interior looks natural and natural, and customers do not want to change anything and live so beautifully that you can repeat a photo shoot any day. And yet the most important thing in this project for me was the amazing experience of communicating with a unique family, the trust that arose from the first day of work, and as a result, the project was implemented without the slightest changes."
