On December 21, the results of the International Architectural Award ADDAWARDS were summed up in St. Petersburg. The Grand Prix was won by the project of a country house designed by Peter Safiullin for film director Timur Bekmambetov. By the way, for the first time this project was published in our magazine
The house of Natalia Fishman-Bekmambetova and Timur Bekmambetov stands on the banks of the Volga River, just a 15-minute drive from the Kazan Kremlin. Built according to the project of architect Peter Safiullin, it has become the embodiment of a modern attitude to traditions.

There is rarely a free minute left in the schedule of two creative people. Even the construction of the house was only three months! "At some point Timur and I got tired of living in a rented apartment," Natalia says. — But in March 2020, when the plot for construction was purchased, the filming of "Devyataev" was underway. Then I decided firmly: while Timur is shooting a movie, I will finish the house for his birthday on June 25. The deadlines did not frighten me: for six years in Tatarstan, I participated in the implementation of more than four hundred projects of parks, embankments and streets and I know how to communicate with builders."

The rounded corners of the house remind of the shape of boats.

Before that, the couple considered different options up to the purchase of a ready-made house. "We needed a simple small house, unlike the "prestigious" mansions that were offered for sale," Natalia continues. — During my work and life in Kazan, I got to know the whole of Tatarstan. It was important to me that our own house was invented by a local architect, built from local materials, furnished with furniture made here, had a connection with local traditions, but fashionable and modern."

At the same time, their friend, architect Peter Safiullin, was completing the house for the showroom of his Yaratam brand. The building itself should become part of the exposition — a typical, but author's house, which is quickly built and created, like other Yaratam design objects, with love for materials and respect for traditions. Timur and Natalia immediately realized: this is what they need! Although the dimensions of the original project were proportionally increased by one meter, the building looks compact and harmonious in the surrounding nature. "From the air, compared to our neighbors' houses, ours looks like a kennel," Timur laughs. "However, there is a Tatar saying: a neighbor should be better than yourself."

"I grew up in Samara, a city on the Volga, so we were also looking for a plot by the water"

Huge windows erase the boundaries between the house and the street: the first thing you see at the entrance is the same view of the river that was here before construction. Rounded corners emphasize the natural smoothness of the interior, and also remind of the shapes of boats, creating a connection with the water surface reflected in the windows. This design also has a practical purpose, reducing heat loss in winter. "But just in case, we put almost a bourgeoisie instead of a classic fireplace," says Natalia. — Yes, and we bake potatoes in it!"

The entrance area opens into a two-light living room, which turns into a lounge on the second floor, Natalia's office with access to the exploited roof and a balcony shared with the master bedroom. The guest bedroom on the ground floor appeared after several attempts to place Timur's office in this place — no layout provided the necessary privacy. Therefore, on the way from the house to the pavilions by the water, another building was built: half is occupied by a bathhouse, and the second is a large director's office. The shape of the rotunda pavilions echoes the old towers of the Kazan water intake, which are visible from this place.

The connection with traditions was reflected in the interior in a new way. From the stairs to the kitchen, the house is hand-assembled and furnished by local Yaratam Design craftsmen. There are no ornaments and a hint of ethnography, but a very recognizable palette. The living room was repainted four times until they got into the traditional green color. The walls in the bedroom look like the color of fresh kaymak. And for the headboard, Peter carved a copy of the wooden gate of the Old Tatar Settlement - one of the symbols of Kazan, which became Timur and Natalia's hometown.

The bathhouse is built on the river bank.
